Alimony is the support you will pay to or receive from your spouse.  The goal of the court is to ensure that each spouse can maintain the standard of living they enjoyed prior to divorce.  Some of the factors the court takes into consideration are the length of the marriage, the income of each spouse, post-divorce expenses, accustomed lifestyle, and child support.

There are four types of alimony in New Jersey:

Permanent Alimony is generally granted when one spouse earns much more than the other and the couple has been married for a long time.

Limited Duration Alimony usually applies to shorter marriages.  One spouse needs financial support until they are able to get back on their feet.

Rehabilitative Alimony provides temporary support to a spouse as they get educated and/or trained for employment.  A plan with a timeframe is put into place.

Reimbursement Alimony can be requested if one spouse supported the other through their education/training for a career.
